Holy crap! Radiohead!

Can’t believe no one’s talking about Fair Game this award season. Such a great film, excellent believable performances, tight script, confident detailed direction. Sorry Paul, this time Doug wins!

Best Film 2010

I don’t think The Social Network is the best film of 2010. Far from it. To make a point of it I guess I have to finish my list, that is without watching the rest of last year’s highlight, which are quite a lot: The King’s Speech, Black Swan, The Fighter, True Grit, 127 Hours, and about ¾ of The Kids Are Alright.

#2 Inception

I stand by my initial thought: it’s a brilliant idea (pun intended) but only a great film. Watching the film is like watching the whole Matrix trilogy, one third of it is about the idea, and is nothing short of mindblowing, the rest is the embodiment of the idea and is sadly imperfect. I especially hate the snowy Eames’ dream which was terribly directed. This time I agree with the Academy. Still, the kind of extremely intelligent entertainment we can’t get enough of.

#3 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One

I feel very fortunate to have the privilege of not reading book. This one’s a blast, balancing subtlety and patience with loud actions. Of course, it’s only half a movie, but it’s one hell of a half.

#4 Let Me In

This remake actually lacks the innocence of the Swedish original, but somehow grounding the story in an oldschool American horror atmosphere makes perfect sense. Not to mention, Matt Reeves is an extremely talented director that can be as cold as Stanley Kubrick yet as charming as Steven Spielberg.

#5 Animal Kingdom

Not as grand as I’d hoped, but it’s hard not to be at the edge of your seat watching this extremely confident feature film debut from Australian David Michod.

#6 The Square

Coming from the same group of people as the above in this exciting time of what might be the Australian new wave, this debut from Nash Edgerton is equally convincing. Watch his short film “Spider” first then watch things go wrong for about an hour and a half longer.

#7 Please Give

Actually not much to say except that I enjoy this little film immensely.

#8 The Killer Inside Me

This film bothers me. Sometimes that’s enough.

#9 A Prophet

The rise of a criminal is always an interesting story to tell. Add to that an exciting combination of European and Hollywood sensibility from French Jacques Audiard and you have one hell of a thoughtful and entertaining crime film.

#10 The American

Now this one, contrary to the title, actually doesn’t feel American. In the hand of Ducth photographer Anton Corbijn, the old story of an assassin gone soft is told in a restraint, almost silent way. In a case like this, Corbijn visual background certainly helps along with Clooney’s charming performance, gluing you to the screen where very little happens.

liking the new logo, don’t know if it’s necessary but it sure is bold yet simple and confident. Take a deep look at it pepsi!

Best Film 2010 #1 (in first-came-to-mind order)

After Panic Room, I remember thinking could David Fincher just go overboard with his direction, what with camera swooping around this exclusively built (or at times digitally created) set house? Well, I don’t know, I mean it’s certainly a hell lot of fun. But thank God Fincher showed a different side of his craftmanship with this dialogue driven drama. After struggling not to seem too sentimental making a film about the romance of a backward-aging orphan, Fincher seemed more relaxed catching up with his cynicism chronicling the founding of Facebook in the hand of a socially inert genius. Even if this one’s not his best, at least he seemed in tune and confident.
